Austin ranks 14th on the latest list of greenest U.S. cities from SustainLane.com. Texas’ Capital City moved up one place since the last time SustainLane compiled its rankings in 2006. Topping the list were Portland, Ore., San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and New York, in that order. The SustainLane U.S. city rankings factor in each city’s ability to maintain healthy air, drinking water, parks and public transit systems, as well as an active, sustainable local economy with green building, farmers markets, renewable energy and alternative fuels. According to SustainLane, Austin “took a decisive step toward becoming the planet’s ‘Carbon-Neutral Capital’ when it adopted an aggressive climate protection plan in 2007” that calls for all the city’s operations, facilities, vehicle fleets, and utilities to be carbon neutral by 2020.
